Mentor Expectations
As a mentor in the Enginuity Network, your role is to share your experience, offer perspective, and support students as they explore their professional direction. You are not expected to have all the answers; you are expected to show up with honesty, openness, and a genuine interest in the student’s growth.
- Meet with your mentee at least three times during the semester. Meetings can be virtual or in person, and the schedule is set between you and your mentee.
- Respond to student outreach in a timely manner. Students initiate contact in this program. When a student reaches out, a timely response signals that their initiative matters.
- Share your experience openly. Students benefit most when mentors share not just successes but also the challenges, pivots, and lessons learned along the way.
- Help students think, not just plan. Ask questions that help students clarify their goals, evaluate options, and build confidence in their own decision-making.
- Practice inclusive mentorship. Meet students where they are and honor the full range of backgrounds, identities, and aspirations they bring to the relationship.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries. While you may choose to share professional contacts, mentees should not expect direct job offers or referrals. Both mentors and mentees agree to a confidentiality compact when they join.
